ARC Spay & Neuter Specialists

Reports to: Executive Director

General Description:

Responsible for the daily care of all surgical patients, ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients. Position will include high volume, high quality spay/neuter surgery and occasional vaccination or preventative care clinic. Together with ARC’s Clinic Manager, you will be responsible for training staff in all aspects of patient care and efficient/safe clinic practices, maintaining a professional and friendly manner at all times. It is expected that you will act as a steward of ARC’s mission, values, and principles, ensuring all business endeavors and relationships are consistent with the organization’s mission, policies, and goals.

The offices and operations of this clinic may be high-stress and busy at times. This position is scheduled for 1 day a week with the possibility of occasional 2 days a week. You and ARC leadership will work together to be flexible based on organizational requests for a schedule change.

Qualifications:

1. Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of Florida

2. Must maintain all current and correct licensure

3. Must maintain professional liability insurance and name ARC Spay & Neuter Specialists as an additional insured on the policy.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help.
  3. Must be able to work in potentially extreme environmental temperatures.
  4. Repetitive movements such as bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, standing, and other similar activities are required.
  5. Ability to hear, talk and hand dexterity required. Additionally, specific visual abilities, including close vision and ability to adjust focus are required.
  6. Noise level is moderate to high.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Functions may include but are not limited to the following:

Achieve Organizational Results:

Share leadership with other part-time and relief veterinarians to comply with the HQHVSN standards set by the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) as well as ARC’s Policies and Procedures. This includes but is not limited to:  

  1. Examining animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to withstand surgery
  2. Perform on average, 28 surgical sterilizations a day. Consideration of this goal includes exceptions for days where there are high risk patients or patients who require additional care and/or monitoring.
  3. Examine animals post-operatively to ensure appropriate healing.
  4. Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow-up care.
  5. Supervise post-operative rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.
  6. Learn and become versed in our clinic software, ClinicHQ, specifically Patient Flow, so that, with the assistance of the surgical technician, the medical condition and treatment of our patients is documented.

Staff Leadership and Medical Oversight:

  1. Provide adequate notice to the Executive Director of any anticipated absence or tardiness.
  2. Creatively solve problems daily.
  3. Make reasonable and sensible medical decisions.
  4. Make recommendations for improvement including suggested training programs.
  5. Ensure all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients.
  6. Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by Veterinary Technicians
  7. Provide immediate feedback to the Lead Veterinary Technician relating to any staff performance issues and provide input for staff annual performance reviews.
  8. Collaborate with Lead Veterinary Technician to identify staff members appropriate for training programs.
  9. Effectively “team lead” in the surgical space, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members.
  10. Solicit input and communicate updates regarding the clinic’s disease control protocols, surgical protocols, or other medical issues as appropriate.
  11. Provide input to the Executive Director related to medical, surgical, and disease control protocols.
  12. Communicate effectively and professionally with ARC leadership, staff, clients, and colleagues.

Compliance and Accreditation:

  1. Maintain a Florida Veterinary Medical License
  2. Must hold a current DEA license.
  3. Practice ethical Veterinary Medicine at all times.
  4. Ensure compliance with all regulatory, safety, security and operational standards related to animal care and the practice of Veterinary Medicine with respect to healthcare, daily maintenance, impounding, behavior modification/enrichment and euthanasia – including limiting the practice of Veterinary Medicine to licensed Veterinarians.
  5. Ensure all animal care services performed through ARC meets or exceeds all best practices and professional standards and are consistent with client expectations.
  6. Stay abreast of current animal welfare issues, regulations, standards, best practices, etc. as well as the changing needs of the community.
